What is Superwhisper?
Superwhisper is a dictation app born on the Mac, now also on Windows, iPhone and Android. It runs Whisper models on your device: on the free plan, your voice never leaves your computer and dictation is unlimited.
Its strength is “modes”: prompts that turn your dictation into an email, a note or a message, with the AI model of your choice. AI modes, cloud models and file transcription are Pro-only.
What Superwhisper does well
- Free, unlimited dictation with on-device Whisper models: nothing leaves your computer.
- Custom vocabulary and text replacements, even on the free plan.
- Highly tunable AI modes on Pro, and a wide choice of local or cloud models.
- File and meeting transcription (on Mac) on Pro.
- One Pro license covers all your Macs, Windows PCs, iPhone and Android, including a lifetime option ($249.99).
Superwhisper vs Keypop: the comparison
| Criterion | Superwhisper | Keypop |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Pro $8.49/month, $84.99/year, $249.99 lifetime | Pro from €5.99/month excl. VAT |
| Free version | Unlimited dictation, no AI | Unlimited dictation on your PC |
| Your voice | On device (cloud models on Pro) | Stays on your PC |
| Works offline | Yes | Yes |
| Systems | Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android | Windows, Mac, Linux |
| AI punctuation and formatting | Pro only | Yes, even free |
| Fixes “5pm… no, 6pm” | On Pro, depending on the mode | No, not yet |
| Dictation → email or list | On Pro (modes) | Yes (Tab) |
On the free plan, Superwhisper allows two modes without AI processing, and no cloud models or file transcription. New accounts get 3,000 words of Pro trial. According to its FAQ, on-device models run well on Apple silicon Macs; Intel Macs are better off with cloud models.

When to keep Superwhisper
- You want to pick your transcription model and fine-tune every mode.
- You transcribe audio files or your meetings on a Mac.
- You also dictate on your phone.
- You’d rather pay once (lifetime license).
When Keypop suits you better
- You want AI punctuation and formatting without a subscription.
- You use Linux, which Superwhisper doesn’t support.
- You want your dictation to become an email or a list in one keystroke (Tab), without writing a prompt.
- You also want to fix, rephrase, translate and summarize your texts from the same bar (Alt + K).
What Keypop doesn’t do
- Keypop doesn’t catch your self-corrections yet: “Thursday, no sorry, Friday” stays as you said it. You can follow up with Rephrase, but it isn’t automatic.
- Saying “comma” or “period” out loud doesn’t work yet: Keypop punctuates on its own, from your voice.
- In a noisy open-plan office, on-device dictation can pick up voices around you. A headset fixes most of it; the Pro plan dictates in the cloud, in France, and ignores background voices better.
- You need to install it (about 4 GB to download, once): Windows 10 and 11 with at least 8 GB of memory, Apple silicon Macs, or Linux. There is no phone app.
Try Keypop, or switch from Superwhisper
- Download Keypop for Windows, Mac or Linux from the free dictation page, and create your free account with your email. The AI downloads once, about 4 GB.
- Put your cursor where you want to write, press Alt+M (⌥ + M on Mac) and speak. Enter inserts the text; Tab turns it into an email or a list.
- Coming from Superwhisper? Fill in your company and its website in Settings → Profile so Keypop spells your product names right, and keep Superwhisper for file transcription if you need it.
